Living in Thailand has allowed me to gain some incredible perspective about overall health and well-being through Thai people and their culture.  Known as the “Land of Smiles”, holiday goer’s flock to this nation not by hundreds of thousands; no. They fly the skies from north, south, east and west by tens, twenties and thirties of millions each year.  Ranking as the largest Buddhist country many travel here for a ‘Zen experience. Trying to escape the seemingly harsh realities in their homelands filled with fast paced lifestyles, dog eat dog surroundings and an overall since of bewilderment. Others come to enjoy the surreal topography of Thailand teeming with lush mountains and hillsides in the North to exotic pristine beaches in the South.  It’s no secret that dining on Thai food from exotic fusion to a simple roadside food cart has travelers salivating as wafts of fragrant aroma fill the air no matter where your sandaled feed may be.  However, there is one other less conspicuous reason that many travel to Thailand.  And that is for their fruit.

Recently while making a hearty fruit salad I began to reflect on the hundreds of conversations that I have had with foreign visitors boasting and gloating over how fresh, delicious, colorful and exotic the fruits are here in amazing Thailand. Fruit can be found literally everywhere throughout the nation.  Found at every open air market, along the roadsides in front of people’s homes and sold by vendors pushing small carts with a large block of ice loaded with various tropical fruits incased in a lovely thick plastic reliquary.  In most countries after lunch or dinner a lovely slice of pie a la Mode may be enjoyed or a rich chocolate piece of cake may be eaten to provide a quick glycemic boost.  However, on the contrary, Thailand will serve fresh fruit to satisfy the need for something egging on a sweet tooth. Nature’s way to satisfy, refresh and provide for your overall health.

  1. Pineapple Krabi


Bromelain is a complex mixture of substances found in the pineapple.  Cysteine proteinases found in Bromelain aid as an anti-inflammatory and benefit digestion. Pineapple is a great source of Manganese, Thiamin offering energy production and immune defense. A fruit high in Vitamin C, fighting against free radicals that can damage normal cell development. This crowned fruit is a great treat to turn to for the prevention of the common cold and flu.

  1. Kiwi

This succulent furry fruit is high in Vitamin C and E; helping to reduce skin damage caused by free radicals.  Keep in mind eating kiwi to prolong the dawning of those fine lines and wrinkles.

  1. Coconut

A fruit that can be found liberally throughout Thailand; coconuts contain lauric acid.  Lauric acid has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties as well as boosting the immune system. Drinking the juice from a fresh young coconut provides ample electrolytes, which can prevent dehydration.

  1. Watermelon

Bursting with red juicy flesh the watermelon ranks high in water content to keep you nice and hydrated.  Eat this colorful fruit loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to help prevent discoloration that follows aging skin.

  1. Mangosteen

To promote smooth, radiant and glowing skin consuming Mangosteen, known in Thailand as the Queen fruit, will fight against damaged skin cells. This purple bulb encompassing succulent white flesh is full of antioxidants and Vitamin C.

  1. Papaya

Eaten or applied topically, papaya does wonders for your skin.  A natural complexion toner and fighting the formation of wrinkles; all the while Vitamins A, C and E nourish the skin.

Jackfruit yields a mildly sweet flavor.  Vitamin A protecting eye damage so that you can see the beauty of this lovely light yellow fleshly fruit. Other nutrients discovered in Jackfruit are Vitamin B6, potassium, carotene and xanthine. Great for heart health, anemia, building the immune system, anti-aging, cancer curbing, stroke prevention and more

  1. Mango

Don’t be fooled by the mango. This fruit famous to most tropical countries is known to host over 20 different vitamins and minerals.  Mangos are fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free.
