Is it more family, work or “me” time? From day to day the equilibrium of life is constantly shifting and unexpected events happen all the time and this affects us in many ways. Maintaining balance in our lives is never easy.

How do we bounce back to where we need to be?

Why do we need to restore the order?

The answers lie in creating balance using what we all have – our body, mind and soul.

There is a wheel of life that requires us to focus on eight important life aspects:

  • Relationships
  • Work

  • Financial
  • Relaxation and hobbies

Ten easy steps for regaining balance when using your body, mind and soul.


1. Air.  Proper breathing is fundamental to the body.  As you wake up, get the body full of oxygen by getting into a seated relaxed and straight postured position and slowly breathe in for ten seconds, hold for forty seconds and then slowly out for ten seconds.  Do this five times in the morning, midday and in the evening.  The benefits of performing correct breathing cleanses toxins and revitalizes the body. The brain performs more effectively and is fed the food it needs, Oxygen.

2. Water.  Our bodies rely on proper hydration all day, but most importantly, first thing in the morning you must drink one liter upon rising and add a lemon or lime for added benefits. Drinking three to five liters per day is adequate, it helps with liver function and cleanses the body.

3. Exercise. Crucial for so many reasons. It lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 45% and promotes longevity.

Start by becoming active for five days a week, like walking between two and four kilometers at a medium to fast pace.  This is a good way to kick start the process. Try three to five days per week of cardio plus strength training. Stretch every day by challenging every muscle possible. Try Yoga for strength and core work. Be proactive by doing online research for combination training techniques for either a gym or a home workout. Contacting a wellness Coach (Bodymindsoulutions) for proper guidance and personal training is always a good option.

Benefits of exercise will help improve sleep and increase energy levels. Your metabolism starts to fire up and the fat burning process begins. Become active and get that heart pumping!

4. Food. It can be your best friend or your worst enemy, the choice is yours in what you eat. A balanced diet combining protein, carbohydrates, fats and fiber works well for most people but unfortunately it is trial and error to find what your body responds to best. There are so many opinions on nutrition today so you need to find what works for you. What you put in is what you get out. The saying goes “eat like our great ancestors did”, but that did not include junk food and sugar.



5Reading. An exercise for the brain. It is so imperative to read on a constant bases. As a muscle needs stimulation so does the brain, and we are not talking about watching hours of television. Try a book a month and then a book a week, which is twelve or fifty two books every year.  You are sure to be an expert with all the knowledge you are gaining from reading. Try to be a hard working student learning and challenging the brain everyday.

6. Setting life goals creates ‘Definiteness of Purpose’ and creates positive structure in our lives.

Regarding your mind, if there is one aspect that needs your attention the most, it is planning or goal setting. Create daily, weekly and monthly goals, keeping in mind the wheel of life’s eight aspects.  Doing this will maintain good balance and keep your focus on your core values.

Try to create good time management when planning your day; as Steven Covey said “Put first things first” and “Have the End in Mind”.

7. Affirmations. A great way to train your brain in its conscious and sub conscious state to remain positive and focus on your dreams, it teaches you to never give up no matter what the circumstances are.

Daily repetition of positive words have proven to have a profound effect in our daily lives.

“Your self talk” is your compass in life as well as phrases like “day by day in every way I am becoming better and better” and “all I need is within me now”.  When using the phrase “I am” we become what we say, e.g. “I am beautiful”, “I am a good person”, “I am successful” and I am in control. As Tony Robbins once said “Repetition is the mother of skill”. Try it throughout the day and replace those negative words with positive ones.


8. Meditation. A great tool to use. The benefits have proven to be truly astonishing and most people find its greatest potential to be used in the morning and at night.

It requires patience and time so start with five minutes a day.  Complete silence of the mind, in a quiet and comfortable environment. Keep it until you reach fifteen to thirty minutes of complete silence a day.  It works when you can stop all the chatter in your head and listen to the peace of the soul.

9. Giving of your time to the community in the form of charity work or community projects not only helps other people, but ourselves too.

You tend to forget about your own issues for a while and help others with theirs.  May it be by purely being a friend or getting involved in a community project that aligns with your value system. It heals the soul, creates a sense of wellbeing and helps to give back.

As the wise Bruce Lee once put it “True living is living for others”.

10. Surrounding yourself with good, uplifting people may it be family or friends has proven to help with things like loneliness, premature death and a good sense of belonging “who you surround yourself with is who you become”. Get out there and let the good light of people brighten up your day
